Giving Tuesday: Red Rover

Happy Tortie Tuesday, Missians!

The weather's pretty ugly deep down South, but I managed to make it in to work without being washed away--so that's something to be happy about.  And because I didn't get washed away, I get to share today's Joy of Giving, Pet Organization with you!  Yay!  Today's pet organization is Red Rover. Here is their mission statement in their own words:

"Founded in 1987, the mission of Red Rover is to bring animals out of crisis and strengthen the bond between people and animals through emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education. Red Rover accomplishes its mission by engaging volunteers and supporters, collaborating with others and maximizing the use of online technology".

What really got me excited regarding Red Rover, was when I read how they offer assistance to domestic violence victims who have pets and are in need of somewhere to place them.  Many times in domestic violence situations, we don't think about the animals involved.

There are shelters for human victims to go to, but not all of these shelters will accept animals.  This sometimes forces domestic violence victims to have to leave their pets behind in a potentially volatile situation.  Some abusers with purposely hurt or kill animals in an attempt to further emotionally traumatize the human victims.  It's so wonderful that Red Rover can help to provide a way for pets in these unfortunate situations to be safe too;  so needless to say, I think this alone makes them an awesome organization--even though they also help animals in a myriad of other ways too!

Here's how Red Rover can assist in domestic violence situations:

"RedRover offers financial assistance for victims of domestic violence and their pets through our Safe Escape grant program. The goal of the program is to help families with pets safely escape domestic violence together. Funding is mainly provided to help with the cost of temporary pet boarding while a client is in a domestic violence shelter, though other costs, like urgent veterinary care, can be considered".
