Unchain a Dog Month

Happy Freestyle Frisky Friday, Missians!

It's nearly weekend time; and if you're down in our neck of the woods, time for more Mardi Gras parades!  And though we all love having a good time and being light hearted, sometimes we have to tackle some topics that are not so fun.  Today's topic would be one of those.  In addition to some other great, worthy causes celebrated this month, February is also Unchain a Dog Month.

This is important because there are too many dogs left chained in yards--and it needs to stop.  Imagine if you were left out in the rain, cold, and heat with a rope or chain around your neck.  Now imagine having hardly any room to move, and many times having the rope or chain so tight, that it rubs your neck raw, creating room for infection, and of course, pain.  What if you were left like this for not only hours, but sometimes, days at time? You'd feel lonely, abandoned, irritable, and not too loved.  Wouldn't be much fun, would it?  So why would you do this to your dog?

If you do have an outdoor dog, why not at least allow it to move freely in the yard?  If you can't afford to have a fence, but don't want an indoor pet, it might be better to just not get a pet until you can either afford fencing or are willing to keep a pet indoors.  One organization that is willing to help remedy this situation is Fences for Fido.  They are partnering with GreaterGood.org by "building fences for low-income families at no cost".   I think that this is such a wonderful idea.  To check outwhat these guys are doing and find out how you can help, click here:

Okay.  I'm stepping down off my soapbox.  But hey, if I was going to get on one, this was a darned good time to do it.  This is one of those common sense situations.  If it would be uncomfortable, unbearable, or isolating to you, then it likely would feel the same way to your pet.  So just don't do it.  No ropes.  No chains.  Just love.  Hey, I like that.

Until next time, this is your host J,
signing off......

I'm not chained--and no other dog should be either!
