Happy National Pet Day, Missians!
Thanks for swinging by, and checking out another edition of our blog. Well, today is a special day; but hopefully for most pet parents, you celebrate this holiday everyday. Today is the day set aside for us to give special honor, love, and respect to our pets; and even if we're not a pet owner yet, we can still contribute to the welfare of animals in a variety of meaningful ways. Here's just a few:
1. Adopt, don't shop. When you do decide to get in the market to take on a fur-baby, remember to adopt one from an animal shelter. Many times, these animals are running out of time and could be put to sleep if no one steps in and gives them a home.
2. Give a senior or disabled pet a chance. These animals often are overlooked in a shelter environment and end up being euthanized much more often than their younger or more able-bodied counterparts. Senior animals typically are calmer in temperament, and have already been spayed or neutered. They're also easier to train because they've likely, already been socialized and have lived with a family before; and if you don't want an energetic, rambunctious ball of fur on your hands, senior pets fit the bill. They make great cuddle buddies who don't have as high of a need for constant play, (which comes in handy, when you just want to take that midday nap). And don't forget disabled pets! With a bit of love and patience, a disabled pet can greatly enrich families and make wonderful companions.
3. Donate to your favorite animal charities or local animal shelters. These organizations can always use extra funding to keep their doors open and to provide a better quality of life for all the animals housed there, until they can find homes.
4. Volunteer at your local shelter. By volunteering, you make sure the animals get more time for walks, play, and just experiencing human touch and interaction. Many times shelters simply don't have enough employees to ensure that all the animals get proper time to be outside of their cages. By volunteering, you can give these animals the extra love and attention they need.
For those of you who're already pet parents, why not spend some extra playtime with your pet or get them a special treat? Our pets add so much to our lives, in so many ways. Let's be sure to show all animals some love today. Give that extra pat or belly rub. And let's not leave out the snakes, iguanas, tarantulas and other non-traditional pets...please send some extra love to those guys too!
That's all for now folks. Be sure to check back here with us on Friday for our combined Featured Pet and Pet Trivia Posts.
Until then,
