What Was Never to Be Again: Extinct Animals

Happy Friday, Missians!

Glad to be back here with you for another glorious start to the weekend.  I hope you all have something fun planned, (and yes, taking lots of naps and relaxing is fun too)!  As for me, I'll be getting the episode descriptions written for our October Pet Spooktacular shows, and getting them officially scheduled on our YouTube channel.  I'll also be working on The New Girl October website.  I wanted to have it ready by the first day of fall, but I can see that's not going to happen, so I'm still hoping by October 1st it'll be a go.  I also have new news regarding my book, "The Institute" and other things coming your way next month.  More to come...

Now let's talk about extinction.  I know.  Not the brightest topic to kick off the weekend, but it's an important one.  Maybe by focusing on the animals that are no longer with us, it can be a wake up call regarding the ones we still have, but that are in danger of becoming extinct.  First off, what does it mean when an animal or species becomes extinct?  Well, it means that there are no longer any animals of that kind in existence.  Now of course there are some species that I'm glad are extinct because their existence would've likely have meant our extinction, had we ever shared the planet.  Sorry, dinosaurs, but I'm talking about you.

Today's info is courtesy of One Kind Planet and Telegraph.Co.Uk:

So, who are some animals that are still around now, but in danger of becoming extinct?  I'm glad you asked.  Here's a list of ten of our most endangered animals.

1.  The Pangolin
These little dudes are hunted for their scales.  It's reported that they're the most trafficked animal in the world.  Their scales can command $3,000 on the black market!

2.  Rhinos
There are only 60 Javan Rhinos left.  They're being kept at a National Park in Indonesia.  The Sumatran Rhino and the Black Rhino are also endangered, (critically so).

3.  Tigers
These pretty kitties have long been targets for hunters due to their beautiful fur patterns.  The Sumatran tiger is another critically endangered animal, in addition to the South China Tiger, (which is only alive in captivity).

4.  Sumatran Elephant
I'm beginning to think that any animal with "Sumatran" preceding its name, is in trouble.  This animal, along with the other "Sumatrans" on this list, is also on the verge of extinction.  Next to dogs, elephants are D's favorite animal.  Somebody help them!  Can the madness stop?

5.  The Amur Leopard
This animal is so beautiful!  Why?  Just why can't stupid humans just leave them alone?  They're  hunted for their fur, but in addition to that, their habitat has been destroyed because of humans setting up shop there.  Can't we stop being buttholes and graciously share the planet?

The other animals on this list include Cross River and Mountain Gorillas, the Hawksbill and Leatherback Turtles, Sumatran Orangutans (there's that word again), Saolas (really beautiful animals), and Vaquita (a type of sea porpoise).  And of course there are many more not listed here!

Now on the other end of the spectrum is a list of animals who are already extinct, (which is a darned shame).

1.  The Passenger Pigeon
These fine fowl once numbered in the billions, but now thanks to humans hunting them for cheap meat, destroying their food sources, and other tomfoolery, these little guys are no longer around.

2.  Dodos
I'm sure most of you have heard of dodos, (even though these birds were last around somewhere in the 1600's).  It was native to Mauritius, (an island nation in the Indian Ocean, 1,200 miles off the coast of Africa).  They were wiped out in just a few decades.  Poor dears.

3.  Pyrenean Ibex
I think the animal called the Ibex is so beautiful, but unfortunately for the Pyrenean variety, their time on this planet came to an end around the year 2000.  No one is really sure what caused their decline, but either way, they're gone.  Interestingly enough, they briefly made a comeback when scientists were able to clone one, but it didn't survive very long after birth, (some things should be left alone, but I shared those opinions already on my Spider-Goat episode--but I digress).

4.  Quagga
These little dudes were cool as hell.  How much cooler can you get than a "zebra" with stripes only on the front half of its body?  They lived in South Africa, and we have the Dutch to blame for their demise.  Such a shame...

5.  Tasmanian Tiger
These animal were really fascinating in the sense that they were very "hodge-podge" (for lack of a better term).  They were striped like a tiger, but looked like a dog, and had a pouch like a opossum.  The last known "tiger" kicked the bucket in 1936.

The other five animals from this list include:
Steller's Sea Cow, The Pinta Island Tortoise, The Great Auk (a type of flightless bird like the penguin), the Western Black Rhino, and the well-known, Woolly Mammoth; and of course, as with the previous list, there are way too many more that were not included here.  I'm quite sure, there are way more extinct animals, than nearly extinct.

If you felt any sadness in reading about these animals who are completely, or nearly gone, let it be motivation for all of us to protect the wildlife we still have around.  God created animals to share this planet with us.  So, I think there's room for everyone, (of course overpopulation can be an issue with some species, but we're not discussing animals in that category here).

Okay, that's it for now.  Remember we don't have a Missy Show episode tomorrow.  Our next show is scheduled for September 22nd, and our next post will be next week as well.  Which day?  I'll let that be a surprise.

Until next week,
Here's to a fabulous weekend to all!
