Happy Friday, Missians!
And welcome to your first October Pet Spooktacular blog post for 2018...
I'm thrilled to be back here with you guys once again celebrating my favorite time of year here at The Missy Show. Before we get off into today's post, let me also remind you that our first Pet Spooktacular episode, "The Transylvania Connection: Werewolves, Vlad, and Other Scary Legends" will be tomorrow night at 8 pm Central on Google Hangouts, and the episode will post to our You Tube channel shortly thereafter. Be sure to join me and D, for a scary, good time!
Okay, now onto Animals in Superstition. We've all heard the old wives tales about black cats being bad luck; and as a child, I would often hear my mother and grandmother say that if a bird flew into a house or building, that it was a sign of death. But what are some of the other animal superstitions out there? To help us delve into this question, we got a little assistance from two sources:
Exemplore.com and Animalsguru.com
Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are symbolic of good fortune, especially if you meet one going in the opposite direction.
Mice
Seeing a white or brown mouse is good luck, especially in your love life. A grey one, however, is said to bring bad luck.
Squirrels
Squirrels signify that happiness will be found soon.
Hares
If a hare crosses your path, it's a sign of good luck.
Hawks
Hawks signify that powerful enemies are about to threaten you. This is especially pronounced if you see the bird to your left. The left side is, and has always been, the sign of the devil
Magpies
Magpies are an omen of bad luck, even death (especially if seen to your left). Seeing two is very lucky. It signifies that good luck will appear within three days.
Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers are a sign of good luck. If you see one, then very good news will follow.
*Spiders
Spiders are bad luck all around. If seen in the morning, then grief will come. If seen in the afternoon, then anxiety will follow. If seen in the evening, then you will have bad luck with money. Never kill one, as this brings bad luck. To see a spider spinning its web signifies that people are plotting against you. If it's found on your body, then it's good luck.

Animal Myths and Superstitions:
Rabbits
Saying "rabbit rabbit, white rabbit" on the first of the month before any other words will bring good luck - The "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" phrase originated in England, but the exact date is not certain. It was used in Kentucky in the early 1800s. Other variants include a person should say "rabbit rabbit rabbit" just before going to sleep on the last day of the month, and then upon waking the next morning say "hares, hares, hares".
Snakes
Injured snakes die before sundown - A mortally wounded snake will usually die quickly, just like any other animal. Time of day has no bearing on the death of any animal.
Camels
Camels store water in their humps - The humps are actually reservoirs of fatty tissue, a giant mound of fat! The hump allows a camel to survive an extremely long time (up to 2 weeks) without food if need be. Camels avoid dehydration that would kill most other animals because of their oval-shaped red blood cells. Camels can drink a large amount all at once without becoming sick -- almost 32 gallons! As they drink, water is absorbed from their stomachs and intestines slowly. Because their bodies do not release the water into the bloodstream rapidly, they are able to tolerate more dramatic shifts from hydration to dehydration.
Porcupines
Porcupines shoot their quills - The quills are controlled by muscles and are released instantly when they come into contact with another object. A surface has to rub on them for them to lose their quills.
Doggies
A dog wagging his tail will not bite - The wag of a dog's tail tells nothing about his aggressiveness. It simply is a sign of excitement. Other aspects of his behavior can tell more about aggressiveness such as ear position, whether the dog is staring, growling, or barking.
Dogs eat grass because they know they are sick - Many dogs will eat grass and then vomit, but this does not mean that they are sick. Some dogs even eat grass simply because they like it. It is normal for dogs to eat grass in very small amounts -- their ancestors ate grass. It's roughage.
Frogs/Toads
Frogs or toads will give you warts if you touch them - Warts are caused by a human virus, not frogs or toads. But the wart like bumps behind a toad's ears can be dangerous. These parotid glands contain a nasty poison that irritates the mouths of some predators and often the skin of humans.

*Sidenote: I'm not really surprised that spiders are considered bad luck, considering how many people are creeped out by them; and I'd already heard the superstition that killing a spider was bad luck. But I find it so interesting that having a spider actually get on you, is considered good luck! On what planet would that be good luck??
At any rate, hope you guys enjoyed this post. Check back with us next Friday, for our next Pet Spooktacular blog post. And see you tomorrow night for our scary new 2018 show topic!
Until then,
This is your host J,
