Celebrating DOGust

Happy Fursday, Missians!

And happy August 1st!!!

New months equal new beginnings; so we're kicking things off with some all new blog posts for the month of August.  As mentioned yesterday, we're going to start off the first few days of the month with some blog posts and from there, go on a two week hiatus.  Then we'll return August 18th to finish off the month, (before we get into our fall line up).

Okay, so now for today's topic:  DOGust.

Just what is DOGust?

Beside being a cool take on the word "August", DOGust is celebrated every August 1st as a way to celebrate the birthdays of dogs who still remain in shelters and who've been adopted.  Because there may not be a way to know the exact birthdays of these dogs, DOGust uses August first as a type of make-up birthday celebration.

August 1 is also known as DOGust: a make-up birthday celebration for adopted and rescued dogs whose owners can’t pinpoint their exact birthdays.

In 2018, Dogust is a big deal—it’s the 10th anniversary of this dog-centric celebration.
What’s the history of DOGust? It seems the North Shore Animal League decided to declare August 1 the national birthday day for shelter and rescue dogs in 2008, thus the 10th anniversary this year.
In the past, North Shore Animal League has held free adoptions and events on August 1 as a way of promoting DOGust and the availability of homeless pets at shelters and rescues.

If you decided to throw your dog a birthday “pawty” on DOGust, you may want to ask your guests that, in lieu of presents for your pup, they bring a donation for a local rescue or shelter. Many list on their websites what they need, like food, towels and blankets—even toys. Since DOGust is connected back to an animal rescue, this seems that an appropriate idea.

Also, don’t forget to make your pup a doggie cake. I know that a bone-shaped puppy cake is a super popular option for dog lovers around the world.

Finally, since August is often scorching hot, a DOGust party should include water playtime (supervised, of course), frozen treats and lots of shade for cooling down.

Now enough with all the reading, get out there and celebrate with your furry new friend!  And for those of you who haven't adopted yet, but are seriously thinking about it, check out this Good Morning America article on the things to consider before adopting your new pup (or adult doggie):

That's it for now, Fur Friends.

I'll see you all back here on Saturday for our August Pet and Animal Holiday post.

Until then,
This is your host J,
