Spirit Animals and Familiars

Happy Furball Friday!

Sorry I wasn't able to get a post out to you guys yesterday, as scheduled.  I felt a bit under the weather (sort of still do), and had some stuff come up at work.  But I'm here now, and hope all of you are off to a great Friday and start to your weekends.  So, here is the post that was supposed to be for yesterday, "Spirit Animals and Familiars."  Okay, first things first, I'm not saying I advocate, practice, or believe in anything discussed in either of today's articles.  They merely serve as some information on today's topics.  This is for informational purposes only.

With that out of the way, now onto our first article:

Common Spirit Animals:

Spirit animals are all around us – it’s just up to us whether or not we believe in their power, or whether we even notice them at all. When a particular animal crosses your path, it is believed that it is a sign from the universe. Animals guide us, teach us, and communicate with us if we’re open enough to listen.

Learning how to stop and become aware of each animal that crosses your path is not a hard thing to do. Have you ever noticed that there are times in your life when you keep noticing the same animal popping up again and again? Or when you see a specific, rare breed of animal?

Have you ever been walking down the sidewalk and noticed an unusual animal in your path, and thought that’s weird? At one time or another, we’ve all had a unique interaction with an animal that made us pause to wonder if there was a deeper meaning.

Any time an animal crosses your path and you think “how peculiar,” it is most likely a spirit animal! Take time to consider the meaning behind this interaction – it may carry a deeper meaning that could shed light on an area of your life that you’re questioning.

The Purpose + Meaning of Spirit Animals

Aside from day-to-day animals that enter our lives, there is also an entire world of a particular spirit animals that are meant to guide us. There are countless meditations and practices to help you find which spirit animal has been guiding you, and what it continues to do for you in your life today.

The spirit animals that are assigned to us are meant to give us strength, hope, love and comfort. There are thousands of different spirit animals, ranging from insects, reptiles, mammals and more.

The reason our world is full of spirit guides is to protect and support us on our individual paths and journeys. When we are working on our dharma (or purpose), they show up for us in full force to help carry out the purpose we were assigned to complete.

Sometimes spirit guides visit us in our dreams, either warning of a life event that may occur soon, to show us how to be more playful, or manifest our own destinies.

Whatever the reason may be, animals placed in your path are there for a reason, and it is up to you to stop and notice them – to witness what is going on around you what the universe is trying to tell you.

Here are 8 Common Spirit Animals and What They Mean:

Reference the spirit animals below and pay special attention to any of the animals that you may have encountered recently. Their meanings may help determine their purpose for crossing your path . . .

The Butterfly

When a butterfly enters your life, it is believed to be one of the most symbolic signs pertaining to transformation and profound change. You might be moving through different life cycles, and literally changing from the inside out.

Death and rebirth are present here – perhaps something in your old self dying away so a newer version of you can present itself. Butterflies also carry the message of “being light” and floating above earthly matters.

The Spider

When you notice a lot of spiders coming up in your life or in your dreams, it is a reminder for you to create the life you want to lead. Spiders are known for creating intricate webs and patience for capturing their prey so these guides are here to tell us when to start building the life we want.

Spiders also represent the feminine, and the power behind feminine energy. If this is your guide (for now), tap into your creative side and be patient with yourself. Projects, careers, and achievements all take time, and it is the journey that is where the magic is – not the end result.

Like a spider, imagine yourself weaving a web that you want to create for yourself, and patiently wait for the fruits of your effort to become a reality.

The Owl

The owl is one of the more rare spirit animals. If you happen to cross paths with an owl, it is a true sign from the universe. The owl as a spirit guide that represents wisdom, deep connection, and intuitive knowledge.

When this guide comes to you, you might be at a time in your life where you are exploring the unknown – perhaps going through a transition or about to embark on a journey.

The owl has the capacity to see beyond deceit. The owl has intuition and can see what others usually cannot see. When the spirit of this animal is present for you, you are able to see beyond the illusions created by our minds.

The Hummingbird

Hummingbirds are full of lightness, connection and speed. When hummingbirds come into your life, it is a sign of connection, playfulness and adaptability. Hummingbirds connect flowers and plants and they are capable of amazing feats despite their tiny size. They can adapt to anything, and fight while still having a playful and light spirit.

When a hummingbird is present for you, whether for your long periods of time or just for a day, try to connect with the enjoyment of life and try not to take things so seriously. They are here to remind us to be playful and that ultimately, connection is what really matters – whether it is with loved ones or a higher power.

Hummingbirds can help lift you up from negativity and show you that everything happens for a reason. Adapt to your surroundings instead of trying to control outcomes.

The Hawk

The Hawk represents courage, self-awareness, truth, and perspective. Hawks are a revered spirit guide for their ability to see things from a higher perspective – to recognize the truth in any situation for what it is. The Hawk also represents intuition and inner wisdom.

When you see a Hawk, you are being shown that the time is now for you to take an inventory of where you’re at in life and what your next step is. Channel the Hawk’s keen eye to view your life from a heightened perspective, and then tap into your inner wisdom and intuition and allow these things to guide you.

Now onto animal familiars.  Info on animal familiars courtesy of animal familiars and witchcraft courtesy of:

Physical Animal Familiars

Physical animal familiars are different than the usual or typical household pet.

While many witches call their pets familiars, the true sense of the word goes deeper than simply as a “pet” and not all pets belonging to a witch will be familiars.

Historically, the concept of animal familiars was written in texts such as Malleus Maleficarum as a way to identify and prosecute witches during the Middle Ages.

Familiars in the physical form often have a deep psychological and psychic bond with a witch and will often be drawn to the witch while performing spells, rituals, magick or divination.

Some witches may strongly feel that their familiar has been with them in past life times and will continue to be with the in future lifetimes.

There’s a mind-to-mind, spirit-to-spirit connection between the physical familiar and the witch.

Animal Spirit Familiars

Witches can have both a physical animal familiar and animal spirit familiar or just one or the other.

While many witches are familiar with the concept of physical familiars, there can also be spirit familiars.

A physical familiar is an animal that lives with the witch as a pet offering companionship and assisting with physical magickal workings such as crafting, spell work, rituals and more.

A spirit familiar is an animal spirit that works with the witch to do magick, spells and rituals in the astral/spirit realm and can act as a companion and/or protector during astral travel.

A spirit familiar shouldn’t be confused with the terms “spirit animal”, animal spirit guide or “fetch.”*

*A fetch is often in the form of an animal spirit used in hedge witchcraft and hedge riding.

To know more about hedge witchcraft and hedge riding, check out the book To Fly By Night: An Anthology of Hedgewitchery.

For many reasons, it may be probable that a witch is unable to have a physical familiar due to circumstances, finances or living situations, so having a spirit familiar is the best or only option.
For some witches, their familiars are animals that aren’t allowed to be kept legally as pets so meeting the familiar in the astral realm is the only possible way to work with the familiar.

While spirit guides in animal form provide guidance, advice and counsel, a spirit familiar works with the witch in magickal and spiritual workings in the astral realm, for example such as astral spells.

Animal spirit guides will often have more communication intelligence in the terms of spoken thought and language, while spirit familiars are more closely connected to their animal instincts and nature.

Spirit familiars speak more through simple ideas, body language in the same ways as a physical pet or animal communicates.

How to Meet an Animal Spirit Familiar

If you feel drawn to work with a spirit familiar, you can do astral work to invite the familiar to introduce themselves and make an appearance.

Here are a few ways you can send out an invite to meet your familiar in spirit:
Meditation

To begin to meet your spirit familiar, create an “astral temple” or a scenery – some place in the astral realm that you will call “home”.

This can be any place that you can create or imagine, where you feel safe, secure and at ease.

Send out a thought that you want to meet your familiar spirit and ask them to come forward.

Allow the image of one animal or several to come to your mind.

You may see many animals which all may have meaning to you at some point, eventually, you may find your mind narrows the animals down to just one.

If you feel several animals are coming forward, ask them if they are your familiar and listen to what they say or see how they respond.

Feel with your gut to know if the answers you receive and judge for yourself if it’s truthful or not.

When you meet an animal that says they are your familiar or respond in a positive way that confirms it, spend time with the animal and observe them.

Ask yourself in the meditation or afterwards how the animal makes you feel, if you feel an instant connection, if you like the animal specie or breed or not, and if the answers are yes or no, ask yourself why.

When you’re ready to finish the meditation, thank your familiar spirit and let them know you will be back soon.

Follow up with astral visits regularly to strengthen your connection with the spirit familiar then over the course of a few weeks, you can start to do astral magickal workings and see how they work.
Ritual

Another way to meet your astral familiar is to create a ritual to call forth and invite the familiar to come to you.

The ritual can be choreographed / planned or it can be semi-improvisational (depending on how you work with rituals.)

Items that can be used for a ritual to invite your spirit familiar can be a white or brown candle, a petition / small letter or invitation, and crystals such as fluorite, selenite or clear quartz.

When doing a ritual to invite your spirit familiar, don’t become focused on expecting a certain animal to come forth and be your familiar.

Although cats, dogs and wolves are top on the list of physical and spiritual familiars, stay open to the possibility of other animals that may be your spirit familiar.

While a ritual is just one of the first possible steps to inviting a spirit familiar to introduce themselves to you, it will be astral travel and meditations where the real work will happen.
Divination

Tarot and oracle cards can help to open channels to communication and get a better idea of who your spirit familiar is.

That's it for now, animal friends!
